The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody is wonderful, and has something for everyone. There's not much "cowboy" stuff but wonderful historic Buffalo Bill artifacts, gorgeous western art (both historic and contemporary), an amazing gun collection, Plains Indians art and artifacts, special exhibits of various sorts, and a natural history museum devoted to Yellowstone and surrounds.

Chief Joseph ends you up at Northeast Entrance, where there are two bitty little map-dot towns, Cooke City and Silver Gate. Both have a some cabins and motel rooms, none too fancy. I haven't stayed there in several years, so I can't be specific, but I know people like the Super 8 (decent TripAdvisor.com reviews) in Cooke City. From Northeast Entrance it's a quick down-hill (ok, down-mountain) drive straight to Lamar. You have to p@ss through it to get to Mammoth. But given that Roosevelt Lodge (right at the entrance to Lamar from the west) is closed at that time of year, Mammoth is a good choice of places to stay if Lamar is your favorite destination. The drive is very pretty and you will encounter all kinds of wildlife along the way.
