You can see bears and wolves wherever and whenever. My best wolf-sighting ever was along that route, a little east somewhere of Lava Creek/Wraith Falls. It was February, long after dark, and I was driving very slowly because of it. All of a sudden off to my left I saw something move, so I stopped. One after the other, four Swan Lake pack wolves crossed in front of my headlights and disappeared off into the darkness to my right.
The best areas for seeing black bears are right around Tower Junction, Calcite Springs, the Tower store, and on up a little ways towards the shoulders of Mt. Washburn. We saw so many this May that we literally lost count. But mid-September conditions are quite different, and the bears may not be hanging out along the road there. Higher on Washburn is better for grizzly-watching.

Grizzlies are anywhere and everywhere in both Yellowstone and the Tetons, where most of my best grizz sightings have been. My very best ever grizz was just south of Mammoth, near the Hoodoos (the other route out of Mammoth) so you really never know! Do take binoculars!
