If this is your first trip, I would not rent an RV and plan to see the park in that. The roads are narrow, winding, many have no shoulders, and definitely not the kind of thing you want to be traveling in an unfamiliar large vehicle. Only a limited number of pullouts will accomodate a vehicle of any size, which means you would pas s up many wonderful sights. My husband and I have been vacationing in Yellowstone for 30 years and this year, for the first time, we took our motor home. We made a point of moving it from one campsite to another early in the morning before traffic was heavier. The rest of the time it was parked and we toured in our other vehicle. Fly in, get a rental car (you DON'T need 4WD) and stay in cabins/rooms in the park or resorts outside the park. Yellowstone is a big place and you will waste time driving in and out every day if you stay in the gateway communities. You will have more amenities than you would inside the park, but will be unlikely to walk out one morning and find yourself face to face with a bison or other critter as you might in the park. Have fun.
