As has been said elsewhere, once the calendar hits September you can really feel like you have the place to yourself a lot of the time. Even on "crowded" fall days it isn't hard to get away from people if such is your desire.
Wildlife is visible if you know where to look...maybe not quite as "out" as in the spring, but definitely there, and the elk rut is a blast to witness and hear.
You can walk in to most of the major campgrounds and take your pick of sites and prices around the park have usually dropped from their summer highs. If you can do it, I definitely recommend it...but just like spring, you have to pack for about three different seasons to be "safe."
