Main problem is that it's dusty...but it's also often great for wildlife viewing - wolves, coyotes, bison, elk, there used to be a golden eagle nest along the way (don't know if they're using it this year). Since it ends up in one of the prettiest areas of the park, the drive doesn't seem so bad.

Also do the Slough Creek trail that starts at the head (literally, the vault toilet standing all by itself at the end of the road, before it turns towards the campground) at least as far as First Meadow. It's not terribly far but it's incredibly beautiful. Take bear spray. We were back there a couple of years ago when we were treated to a great long howling concert (Slough Creek pack) though we didn't actually see wolves).

It's incredibly beautiful. This is from June of 2007, a supply wagon coming back from Silver Tip Ranch, which is just beyond the northern border of the park. As far as I know this trail is the only access to the ranch.
